Requirements and Qualifications to Apply as a Land Sports Guide

To apply for this job, no prior experience is required. The center requires their own training that you will do once you are hired. Requirements to apply include being at least 18 years old, having great oral communication skills, demonstrating the ability to use sound judgement and seeing safety as a top priority, having the ability to take direction and work without direct supervision, a will to continue learning and improving skills, and maintaining availability to work on weekends and holidays. You also must be physically able to stand outside all day in the heat, cold, or any other safe weather conditions.

    Benefits and Opportunities

    • One opportunity of working as a Land Sports Guide is that you can move up into a Site Lead Role.  Site Leads are in charge of the Land Guides; they are the people who do rescues, oversee guides throughout the day, and they attend leadership meetings.
    • As a Land Sports Guide, you get free access to all Whitewater Center activities. The only exception to this is that guides have to pay the extra zip-lining fee and the extra rodeo rafting fee (each are $10).
    • Guides also get staff discounts at the restaurant on-site, the food and beverage locations around the center, and at the outfitters store on-site (30%). Staff also occasionally get other pro deals to outdoor stores.
    • There is also a "garage sale" that is only available to staff. This is where the outfitters store puts all their old items, that they want to get rid of, for staff to buy at a larger discounted price.
    • Land Sports Guides are paid $9/hour and site leads are paid $12/hour
    • Networking is also a perk of working at the Whitewater Center because the Land managers are always checking in on each site, so you can get to know them during slow hours. Doing an internship through the center is a great way to talk to the supervisors more because regular guides do not have as much communication with the supervisors as I did through my internship. You also meet people from all different places since guides come from different states to work, and guests from all over the country and world visit the Whitewater Center.
    • Some managers work directly with various event organizations, so you can network through them to get in contact with event managers as well.

    Achievements

    • I have learned how to connect guests safely to ropes courses, jump activities, and zip lines. I have learned how to operate these activities and equipment as well as inspect them and know when equipment or activities can be potentially dangerous.
    • I have bettered my communication skills through giving multiple orientations and trip talks a day. I have also bettered this through chatting with guests while they are waiting for an activity.
    • I have learned a lot about the different equipment used on outdoor activities and the difference between various carabiners, bolts, and cables.
    • I have learned more about the outdoors through the Whitewater Center and the different people I work with. Working with people from a different side of the country from where I grew up also caused me to get to know more about other U.S. cultures outside of Texas.
